LJ! I intended not to abandon you for weeks on end while I gallivanted, and then I did. I am sorry!

Most of the gallivanting took place at the lovely [livejournal.com profile] notlob451's wedding last weekend. It was a really beautiful wedding, and I got to see many people I don't get to see often. The Fiddleheads were very kindly asked to play a set at the reception, so I was super nervous excited about that. [livejournal.com profile] cadragongirl and I drove out to Ithaca with a friend of ours on Friday evening (okay, she did the driving. We just sat around and and made comments about my DJ-ing skills. Note to self: prepare several mix CDs for road trips! Not everybody wants to listen to Laura Cortese for six hours. Even if her new EP is RIDICULOUSLY AWESOME, who even gets that kind of energy on a studio recording, seriously). We made it in one piece, though not without adventures involving the GPS, dodgy back roads, and several epic thunderstorms.

We made it to the dessert party around 11, just in time to be introduced to a bunch of people (whose names we promptly forgot) and to have cupcakes pressed up on us in take-home containers. (I had one for dinner Sunday night.) We collected B and found our hotel, which was excitingly air conditioned. I was all hyper after the car trip and the desserts and jumped on the beds and flopped on the couch (there was a couch). We touched up our toenail polish jobs and went to bed.

Saturday morning I took a picture of the four dress-and-cardigan ensembles hanging in the closet to de-wrinkle. Continental breakfast (I was thwarted in my longing for waffles--they had a waffle-maker, and of course it was constantly occupado). We hung out waiting for A, S and T to move campsites so we could all go to the reception ballroom and rehearse. Luckily, Ocean’s 13 was on TV. And practice went remarkably well, considering that we hadn't all played together in four years.

As for the wedding itself: Sage Chapel wasn’t air conditioned, but the day was lovely and breezy, plus paper fans were provided. The ceremony was fairly short and sweet, with some readings and music and just the right amount of gravitas. [livejournal.com profile] notlob451 was beautiful, and they both looked ecstatic.

Drinks before the reception were fun. I kind of hung around the bar area while S pored over the drinks list and ordered something. Finally I just told one of the bar ladies that I didn’t much care for fruity drinks but I liked citrus. She promptly turned around and shook me up something yellow and deliciously frothy that tasted strongly of lime. I decided it was the same thing I’d had at the Senior Gala, which would make it a rockport sour. Mmmm delicious. After I let the others take sips, suddenly everybody wanted one.

The Fiddleheads were on a little after 9. We found a coat closet to practice in one last time. It was tiny and we were not quite squashed in there but a little in each other’s faces and we just started up and it suddenly came together and sounded AMAZING. It was super intense; I was kind of in shock afterward. We had worked out some harmony and chopping stuff that suddenly clicked and filled in thin spots and made everything work once we worked out who was playing what and managed to stay more or less together. So when it really worked it was incredible.

Clearly the way to get us to sound good together after four years apart is to make sure we all have at least one drink in us and then shove us in a small space.

There was no way the actual performance could be that amazing. But it was pretty close. We started off with Marnie Swanson’s (a quirky waltz), which is probably the only wedding-appropriate tune any of us know. And then we morphed into Tam Lin/Julie Delaney/Boston Urban Ceilidh, and people started clapping and whooping and dancing, and there we were in front of the DJ totally rocking out. We did BUC a few extra times since people were totally feeling the vibe.

It was awesome.

[livejournal.com profile] notlob451 pulled us into a Fiddleheads huddle afterward and we kind of stood around hugging for a bit and posing for the photographer. I was so full, full of rightness and joy and utter contentment and security of being with my people doing what we do and knowing we’d done it well and being just a little bit rock stars.

The rockport sour and the white wine from dinner probably didn’t hurt, but mostly I think it was just being there with them.

On the way back to the car, we slowly, mock-drunkenly, sang Star of the County Down. We weren’t actually drunk, but we couldn’t remember most of Black Velvet Band anyway.

Sunday morning I was again thwarted in the matter of waffles. But that was later. First we hung around moping because T was being driven to the airport and separated from us, and we distracted ourselves with Robin Hood: Men in Tights, which was playing on the television. An excellent channel, that.

At last we checked out and headed to downtown Ithaca, where we followed the sound of bells and clacking sticks to where Morris dancing was happening. I fell a little bit in love with Ithaca. A woman with bells on very seriously explained to us that Morris dancing was a ritual associated with health and growing things and fertility, so we should be wary. I rather liked to think we looked like we were in need of warning. Perhaps I wish some small part of my youth had been rather more misspent than it was.

We found the famous Moosewood Restaurant. But alas! it was closed on Sundays. So we headed back to the Mall, that had erst been full of Morris dancers, in search of food. Then with some time to waste before we had to part, we headed for one of the famous gorges of rocky Ithaca and sat paddling our feet in the water and then drying out on the rocks in the sun. We played Pooh sticks and sat about. Finally we absolutely had to drive B to the airport. Then homeward ho.

I miss everyone terribly and have thus thrown myself into work. Am making a playlist for the bookstore. Unfortunately most of my music is much too energetic/awesome/Japanese to be really good Random Background Music, but I've got a few things. I hope everybody likes Crooked Still.

I so, so wish I could have been there. I did get the bride and groom all to myself for a full day and a half, though, so I suppose that's something. ;)

Possibly. :)

But then I also didn't really get to see anyone else.

...next time. :)

*ahem* i did happen to like laura's new EP - i think it was the large amounts of crooked still that had me ready to climb the walls of the car by the time we reached our destination. just find the lead singer's voice uber annoying after awhile.

Thank you all so much for coming and for playing at the wedding! You sounded AMAZING and it was one of my favorite moments from the night. I'm sorry I didn't have a chance to spend more time with you. :( At the very latest, see you all at our 5 year reunion next summer?
