Since People (namely
a4yroldfaerie) have been bugging me to watch Glee, and I’ve been in an Asian drama slump since Tamra the Island *sob*, I decided to give it a try.
It's pretty addictive, though sometimes plot points get dropped for entire episodes at a time (I guess you can afford to do that when you have more than nine or eleven or sixteen episodes).
I find myself liking Quinn a lot. Not so much Finn or Rachel. But just now in ep 8 Rachel and the Other Football Dude hooked up, and I unexpectedly was completely on board with that. Rachel thinks in ingenue cliches, but it’s deliberate enough to be funny rather than annoying. So far. I can’t decide whether Kurt is an over-the-top walking cliche, or a fabulously over-the-top walking cliche. Or just plain awesome.
As of eight episodes in, though, my favorite character is the cheerleading coach. She’s AMAZING. She's the least perky character I've ever seen. She’s confident, snarky and downright cruel most of the time; scheming, ambitious, under a ton of pressure, completely bitchy, villain and anti-glee club, and utterly badass. She has a lot of completely outrageous un-PC opinions, and she airs then without a second thought. She's casually racist and homophobic (I should probably note that this is not generally something I find awesome, but as a character attribute it works for her). She doesn’t give a damn what other people think, and yet she absolutely has to win at all costs. She’s capable of putting grudges in the past and moving on--as long as there’s something in it for her. She’s ridiculously over-the-top, and yet the actress plays her so completely straight that it works, and you can tell Sue Sylvester doesn’t think she’s over the top; she’s just herself, and if that’s too much awesome for other people, tough cookies.
Don’t get me wrong, I spend a lot of my viewing time slapping my hand to my forehead. I sometimes skip the song-and-dance numbers. But honestly, the only American TV I’ve watched lately is Veronica Mars. I have no idea what to do with Glee! It’s the kind of show where the underdogs actually win, the flamboyantly gay dude saves the football team, the pregnant girl hasn’t committed suicide yet, and there have been no creepy stalkers whatsoever! I don’t get it! Yes, people have slightly creepy obsessions with other people, but there have been no eerie black-and-white montages with knives or blood or notes or gratuitous shower shots or anything! The good guys win most of the time, corrupt administration blackmail attempts fall totally flat, and there are actual makeouts with no bug-eyes in sight! You guys, I don’t know what to do with this show! It’s so... so happy!
eta: OH WAIT! As of episode 10, we're back on track with the creepy stalking, and possibly heading into twdrama territory subtext with Finn and Kurt. I feel so much better now!
