If you look at it in context with the other book Elizabeth Pope published, which featured real, but benevolent, ghosts...then I'd say Gothic was actually her thing! But it was taking a lot of the structure without needing the cliches.
Oh, I loved the arguments about proper set-up of the estate in the dark. It wasn't exactly sexy, but it was the kind of intimate that had your heart dropping out of your chest when you thought it Wasn't Meant to Be.
