Erm. Size, maybe? Universities (at least in CA) usually have various subject schools all under the university heading. For example, Such-and-Such School of Humanities at University Blah. As far as I know, most colleges just offer everything under one name. One doesn't say "I'm studying Classics at Yadda-Ya School at UC Berkeley", one just says "Classics at UC Berkeley", but classics are in fact more separated from physical sciences then one would find at a college. Well, actually I wouldn't really know, but that's what I picked up from the University of California admissions materials.
