Revelations About Feminism
Apr. 27th, 2004 11:10 pmDude! It just hit me that William Goldman's The Princess Bride can be interpreted to have a LOT of feminist stuff in it. How did I miss this when I read it the first time? Or the next three times? Argh! Poor Buttercup, how I have misjudged thee! It's not her fault she's an airheaded ninny. She's grown up in a culture in which all anybody talks about is who the most beautiful woman in the world is, and when she tries to assert herself (somewhat pathetically) as something other than an aesthetic object, she totally gets brushed off. ("Wow, Buttercup! You're not just beautiful to me any more, you're downright gorgeous! You're the epitome of female beauty! You're...." "Everybody always talks about how beautiful I am. I've got a mind, Westley. Talk about that." "Later, my love. Now, which way is the Fireswamp?")
I'd spell out a well-reasoned argument, except that I have to go do laundry.
