There are about a million things I should be writing, but I'm lazy and can never resist a book meme. [livejournal.com profile] cadragongirl tagged me after I got all pouty that nobody else had. Mostly I suspect this is because they were afraid I'd grab some book in Greek, and if I were sitting in my usual spot on the other side of the room they'd be right. However! I'm sitting over here instead, so you get "Amelia and the Dwarfs" (serialized 1869-70) by Juliana Horatia Ewing (reprinted in Forbidden Journeys: Fairy Tales and Fantasies by Victorian Women Writers, ed. Nina Auerbach and U.C. Knoepflmacher, Chicago, IL: Chicago University Press, 1992.)

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 4-7 sentences on your LJ along with these instructions.
5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest (unless it's too troublesome to reach and is really heavy. Then go back to step 1).
6. Tag five people.

"Look how content she is," said the old dwarf, "and oh! how she dances; my feet tickle at the bare thought."

"The ordinary run of mortals do not see us," continued the objector; "but she is visible to any one. And there are men and women who wander in the moonlight, and the Mary Meads are near her old home."

"I will make her a hat of touchwood," said the old dwarf, "so that even if she is seen it will look like a will-o'-the-wisp bobbing up and down. If she does not come, I will not. I must dance my dance. You do not know what it is! We two alone move together with a grace which even here is remarkable. But when I think that up yonder we shall have attendant shadows echoing our movements, I long for the moment to arrive."

Okay, I cheated and included an extra sentence. Context: the dwarfs have captured Amelia, a thoroughly troublesome child, and sent a magical "stock" or double to take her place in the human world while she does chores and amuses them. Being fond of dancing in the moonlight, here they want to take her out for some revels.

6. Oh, I hate tagging people. If you want me to tag you, leave a comment and I will, how's that.
