It's an exam, except you take it when and where you want to. In some cases, it's basically a paper or (in my case) a series of short papers similar to one you'd get on an exam, but you treat it like any other paper - use books, take as long as you need to. I've also had actual tests that I have to take, say, during a time span of two hours over the weekend.
