I don’t think I ever had an academic debate outside of a classroom
You're kidding!? I had them all the time in high school and college. Admittedly, they tended to be outnumbered by the frivolous (eg. discussing Sean Bean's voice) or the mundane (complaining about work), but they always seemed to happen. Possibly more frequently in high school, before everyone got so jaded.
I remember being particularly struck in Stage Beauty that Claire Danes' accent didnt suck, which was truly astonishing to me after the painful fading in and out she did in Les Miserables.
Must reread Swordspoint; it's been seven or eight years and I only vaguely remember it.
