Tibullus: Let all the gold in the world be lost, and all the emeralds too/ Rather than some girl should weep for my journey.

Me: That’s... not very romantic, in context. But kind of practical, I guess. And more conducive to a harmonious marriage-relationship than “Let all the gold in the world be lost, and all the emeralds too/ So long as one girl weeps for my journey.”

Nrgh. Practicality is so not the point of love poetry. Practicality is why people write things like the Oeconomicus. Reading pastoral elegy is like reading distressingly un-emo bad emo poetry. I mean, the emo is the good part.

But first... Some time last week in the school semidaily snotrag paper... a quote totally out of context...

Daily Snotrag Paper: “’Totalitarian ideologies dedicated to the use of force cannot be reasoned with,’ B. (affiliated in some way with the Ayn Rand Institute, I forget how) said. ‘They need to be crushed.’”

Me: AHAHAHAHAHAHA! That is possibly the funniest thing I have ever read.

Rome Again, Rome Again, for real

Brutus: I believe thrones are usually more decorative; that is decidedly plain and... chairlike.

(later)
Me: WAH. ... OH THE NAMING IRONY, I LOVES IT! ...Does this mean we get to see a Roman funeral?

Spent an hour and a half in the practice rooms, had the worst cup of chai latte ever, plunked down in campus bookstore for first 8 chapters of City of Bones. Was thus somewhat in the mood for (later)

Ye Olde Movie Reviewe: “Interview with the Vampire” It was... okay? I enjoyed it... sort of? I saw like the last 5 minutes on TV once, years ago, so that part was totally not shocking. But it was a good ending. And Claudia's Issues were real. And the music was nice. However, since it is no fun to end a solitary evening with a vampire movie, I watched a couple of episodes of HYD too. Unfortunately it copied that one Lady Catherine scene from P&P that always annoys me a little bit. Why doesn’t *insert heroine here* just SAY that she hasn’t decided one way or another, in addition to the awesome telling-off? That’s the nice thing about Robin McKinley books: for the most part, people behave sensibly.

Back in the bookstore... Looked at watch. Went back to apartment, guiltily. Meant to get some work done, but then decided to skive off to the Getty Center instead. Wandered around gardens. Said hello to St George and his neighbour Alfonso d’Something, whom I have taken to calling Sir Walter (not, of course, Sir Walter Elliot. More like The Princess and the Goblin Sir Walter). Found a new one I like, whose name I have of course forgotten, but whom I shall henceforth call “That Nice French Royal Secretary Reading the Iliad in his Dressing-gown”. Ah, Art.

It's... hmm. Reserving judgment until I finish.
