Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey. Shiny history detective novel! Am I the only person in the world who actually likes the Wars of the Roses?
Excellent. Now go forth and read The Sunne in Splendour by Sharon Penman, if you have not already done so. Then read anything else by Sharon Penman you can get your hands on. A little short on goblins, but lush and gorgeous historical novels nonetheless. If you like the historical detective work aspect, I can recommend The Conjuror's Bird, which is a little like Possession but with 18th century naturalists instead of Victorian poetry. It is therefore about a third of the length.
An amusing book that has nothing to do with either goblins or the Wars of the Roses is The Witchfinder's Daughter, which I include mainly because it is the most recent work of fiction I have read, except for a collection of P.G. Wodehouse stories while I was sick (also read these if you have not already).
