Here be Dragons is still one of my favorite novels of all time. But, as you point out, it has a happyish ending. The immediate sequels to it are Falls the Shadow and The Reckoning, which are equally beautiful - the history isn't their fault! I read When Christ and His Saints Slept this summer and loved it; the Sunne in Splendour is amazing. I was a little underwhelmed by Time and Chance, I also haven't really warmed to her mystery novels, but I've only read one.
