timerippleBack in California, where I have at long last been reunited with my copy of The Perilous Gard. I really hope it snows (yes, I live in one of those parts of CA now). It is certainly cold enough to snow in my bedroom. Where the hell did I put my fingerless gloves?

What have I neglected to post recently? Well, I'm afraid it's a jumble of books, the Ritter Sport chronicles, and more books, interrupted briefly by cute guys and strange incidents. To wit:

Ritter Sport flavor of the day: Jamaica Rum Trüffle. Mmm, tasty. The rum tang takes some getting used to, but not all that much. Still, I may be hallucinating drippy sounds now... oh wait, no, that’s the ROOF OF MY BATHROOM LEAKING WTF.
I have not bought cold-weather boots, but I have bought jeans of stupendous hotness, because all my other trousers are suddenly too big. Not sure whether to make a smiley or a frowney. It is incredibly difficult to find clothing neither Petite nor Above Average here. What is with this country? eta: okay, now the jeans of stupendous hotness are also too big. Curse the comfortable yet inevitably baggy stretchiness of stretchy jeans!
To follow up the last post re: cell phone stuff, I finally gave up and found an actual store where I could buy an actual airtime topup card, which is not actually an actual card but an expensive PIN. The plus side is that I had an hour and a half of very expensive cell phone time, and that I whiled away a long time in line talking to a hot Australian guy. That’s “hot Australian guy” as in “looks a hell of a lot like a mid-20s Australian Ewan McGregor”.
Self? One week before you leave the country is not a good time to be encountering vast quantities of male hotness. Wah.
Recent Books Borrowed from the UBC Educational Library of Fantastic:
Tricksters by Margaret Mahey. OMGWTFAWESOME. Sort of reminded me of Madeleine L’Engle’s books about the Austins, except not annoying. Also, I want to go to New Zealand.
BOOK: Ovid, Hadfield, Felix.
ME: Ovid! Metamorphoses! I am wracked with guilt! I must go forth and translate 40 lines of Perseus & Andromeda immediately! *does so* AHAHAHAHA, Perseus is such a tool.
The Bone Collector’s Son by Paul Yee (Tradewind 2003). Quite good right up to the end, when things suddenly go all OOC. I now own a signed copy because the author did a talk at UBC and also, I work for his publisher. Being an historian, he has a very good answer to that eternal bane of authors: “I get my ideas from my research!”
The Arthur trilogy (The Seeing Stone, At the Crossing-Places, King of the Middle March) by Kevin Crossley-Holland. I really want to read Gatty’s Tale now, which caught my eye even before I was told to read these for Research Purposes. Also, I have forced my boss to read The Mists of Avalon for Research Purposes. I am so evil.
The Goblin Wood by Hilari Bell. Good but unsubtle and unexceptional. On plus side, goblins! On minus side, they might as well have been Keebler elves.
King of Shadows by Susan Cooper. Not my favorite of hers, but entertaining. Also, Shakespeare galore = good.
Bloody Jack by L.A. Meyer. Quite entertaining. I really want to re-read Robin Hobb’s Liveship trilogy now.
Curse of the Blue Tattoo by L.A. Meyer. Sequel to Bloody Jack. Entertaining, but I have a feeling this series is going to get old really fast.
In Progress: Goldengrove by somebody, because how could I not? Even if, so far, nothing happens. Margaret, are you grieving/ Over Goldengrove unleaving?
eta: I gave up, because it was Go To Library Day, and still nothing had happened.
Aaaaand Books Bought (I only went out to buy groceries, truly I did. But somehow the books interfered...):
The Wise Woman & Other Fantasy Stories by George MacDonald.
Time Cat by Lloyd Alexander. I have loved this book for ages, especially the part with Awin and Baetan. I always kind of hoped they would get their own book some time.
Court of the Stone Children by Eleanor Cameron. This book is utterly amazing. At least, I remember thinking it was both times I read it before. Art! Time travel! San Francisco! Philosophizing about time travel! What’s not to love? Go read this book at once.
The King of Elfland’s Daughter by Lord Dunsany.
Heroes & Monsters of Greek Myth by Evslin, Evslin & Hoopes. Isn’t that fun to say? Evslin, Evslin & Hoopes! I was given their Greek Gods as a very young child, and I blame them for everything that followed. This book promises to be even more awesome. “Delighted to oblige,” said Perseus. “I never did fancy his style. Shut you up in a dungeon... Met another parent like that recently. Oh, that reminds me...”
You guessed it. The cover illustration? Looks just like the dude from Clash of the Titans. I promptly went forth and translated another 30 lines of Ovid’s Perseus & Andromeda. You guys, the sea monster throws up all over the winged sandals. This is the most awesome poem EVAR.
Did I mention that I once had a dream in which my hair was turned into serpents? Not pleasant. I am in total sympathy with Medusa. Did I mention that I think the final scene in Clash of the Titans is totally deep and symbolic, and stuff? No? Well, maybe some other time. When I’m not high on raw cookie dough. Whee!

what are these research purposes? I've thought the Crosseley-Holland books looked interesting, but I don't think I'm over my no-more-Arthuriana-stories-please phase. I don't at all mind if Arthuriana finds its way into other stories (such as Elizabeth Bear's Promethean Age books), and this one looks like it might get past my twitch-council. hrm.
I love George Macdonald so. <3 and of course Lloyd Alexander.
