GREAT BIG CONCERT
(Yeah, did you see what I did thar? Heh, heh. Oh Fiona. Get some sleep!)
Last night I went with
cadragongirl and a friend from one of The Minionships to the Great Big Sea concert!
My concertflailing report should be prefaced with the warning that I'd had about three hours of sleep and was still recovering from a cold, so the world looked a little... special. :P
The concert was at the Orpheum Theatre. It... has seen better days. XD The balcony desperately needs new seats--ones that aren’t all frayed and gross. It’s the kind of place where people walk around with beer they just bought in open cups from the concession stand; where the security personnel don’t care if you put your feet up on the seatbacks in front of you. In fact, they've probably been putting their feet up and drinking beer while waiting for the doors to open.
To be honest, I was kind of delighted by the derelict state of the building.
And then, amid beer cups and grungy seats, there was GREAT BIG SEA. I had never seen them live before and was super excited.
They started with Ordinary Day and some other old stuff--The Night Pat Murphy Died, Chemical Worker’s Song, When I’m Up, Concerning Charlie Horse, Sea of No Cares, When I Am King, Consequence Free. Then they did their new song Safe Upon the Shore a capella, which was totally stunning and eerie and huh, I guess they finally figured out how to use Bodhran Dude’s voice (as much as I love the band, I can never remember which name belongs to which person). Because later on this happened:
BODHRAN DUDE: *sings about a gallows*
FRIEND: Fiona, close your mouth. Are you drooling?
BODHRAN DUDE: HAAAANGGGGMAAAAAANNNNNNNN
FIONA: ...hot.
He was going completely rockstar insane on this rather eerie song and it was fantastic.
And they did a bunch of other stuff mostly a capella, and it was really impressive. Here you have these four pretty big guys belting out lyrics with these big, raw, powerful voices... in perfect four-part harmony.
For some reason they also had the audience do a medley of American folk rock, which I didn’t catch onto until fairly late in the game, because I was born too late for most of it to really be part of my cultural heritage. But then they started playing 500 Miles, and M and I cracked up. Oh, Ryoga.
During the break (during which the annoyingly cologned people in front of us relocated to a box seat to film their video and the annoyingly chatty people behind us just never came back) the background music was more random American rock. I spent a good twenty seconds trying to figure out why I knew the chords to this one song and only then realized that I know the Weird Al parody version. I met him in a swamp down on Dagoba...
After the break they did some more newer, nontraditional stuff I didn’t recognize, then started pulling it back. They talked about how much they love Boston. A hockey song (M and I eyed each other and Big Time Cracked Up again), River Driver, Run Runaway, Jack Hinks, some other stuff. For the first encore, I forget what they did--maybe that was when they did Excursion Around the Bay-- but then Lead Singer Dude came out and did Boston & St Johns, which is ridiculously appropriate for an encore in Boston. Something else, I think, thenBodhran Just Call Me Rockstar Dude on General Taylor (with stunning chorus harmony) and then the full drum kit and instruments again for Mari-Mac and The Old Black Rum. They ended by shushing the audience and doing Old Brown’s Daughter without microphones or instruments or anything.
It was awesome. M and I kept breaking out into giant, stupid grins on the train ride back.
This morning I pseudo-napped on the train while listening to GBS on my iPod, and decided I had just enough time to get chai so I could stay awake for my 9 am shift (after, yet again, not enough sleep. I got about six hours, as opposed to three the night before, and was feeling happy on account of the concert but pretty groggy).
Two sips later and I was bopping into work all lit up like fireworks.
Another sip and I was terrifyingly hyper.
CO-WORKER: Could you watch the reg for a minute?
FIONA: Sure! Sure I can! I would be totally delighted to watch the reg for you! PLEASE LET ME WATCH THE REG FOR YOU! :D :D :D
CO-WORKER: Oh my God, what did she put in her cereal this morning?
FIONA: DO YOU HAVE A FREQUENT BUYER CARD WITH US? :D :D :D
