It is officially spring here, and a rather cool and slightly damp one it has been this past week. I am pleased about this, and hope it continues for a bit. Things have been happening, but I have not been writing about them because there has been no tiiiiiiiiime. Going-away party for people: attended. Daquiris: consumed. Tiny socks for summer shoe wearing: acquired.

[livejournal.com profile] cadragongirl has left for a well-deserved vacation at home, leaving me alone to flail and have fashion crises in preparation for Book Expo America. I did not intend to see her off at 7:30 this morning, but I did because that damn alarm clock next door went off again at 6. REALLY LOUDLY. I compensated by going back to bed and sleeping until 11. At which point I got up, went grocery shopping, made a plan, and went downtown to look at purses and buy tiny socks. H&M’s spring collection is just sweet and lovely, and I really wish I were waiflike to pull off all the floaty layers in cream and pink and deep blue. Sigh. At least I got the socks.

The purse hunt was less successful, in that I hated everything that wasn’t too small or turquoise or over a hundred dollars. Having good taste in purses kind of sucks.

To compensate for my good taste crisis, I shall now make a post about We Got Married, which should put my Good Taste levels firmly in the red.

I KNOW, I KNOW. XD Those of you who know about WGM know why I am making the face of both joy and shame at the same time. Those of you who don't know, you will soon. WGM is a Korean variety show wherein celebrities get paired up to film segments wherein they act like newlyweds. They go on a honeymoon, set up house, go on dates, have couple ring angst, attempt to care for small children, and do other normal and/or bizarre activities based on each episode's assignment.

I never intended to watch it, but then [livejournal.com profile] hakusa_tegami posted about it with a giant encomium to Kim Hyun Joong and I HAD TO KNOW. I mean, I've seen him try to act! It's unsettling! (Though his cameo in Dream High was, I admit, inspired on a number of levels.) Could WGM actually be... the show where Kim Hyun Joong has a personality?

Short answer: yes. Long answer: so help me, I became obsessed. At first, KHJ and his "wife", Hwangbo, are SUPER AWKWARD. She's six years older than him, and she tries to be the mature one while he's constantly off doing weird things like decorating a tablecloth with dishes cut from instant noodle packaging.

But somehow by ep. 30 they’re the CUTEST THING EVER. They compete all the time to see who has to do stupid stuff. On an amusement park date, they challenge each other to appear in the roller coaster picture with deadpan expressions. Least deadpan has to do something embarrassing. KHJ loses, so Hwangbo decrees he must do a ridiculous number of bodyrolls with a sleazy expression. In broad daylight. In the middle of the amusement park.

He does, and then RUNS FOR HIS LIFE.

HWANGBO: We should collect money for this! Hey, you fangirls, take lots of pictures!
KHJ: D: D: D: D: D:
HWANGBO: Are you tired? Do you want a piggyback?

a;lksdjfal;jaflsd SOCUTE.

In ep. 32, they compete at the basketball booth--loser has to do a cutesy act later. KHJ is absolutely determined not to have to do a cutesy act again (he already did one in a previous episode, and died of embarrassment), and Hwangbo loses. She stalls later, when they’re home peeling vegetables for dinner, and KHJ goes, “just say ‘cucumber is delicious~’”. Except he totally does it in a cutesy voice. And then he REPEATEDLY DEMONSTRATES what he means by cutesy. Uh, dude, I thought you didn’t want to be the one to act cute...? XD She promises him an explosion of cute next week, rather than just a cucumber this week.

KHJ: Is it such a waste of effort to show me a cute act?
HB: Well, if you put it like that, no...
KHJ: Does it take so many calories to show me a cute act?
HB: I want to save it for later.
KHJ: Just give it to me generously.
...
KHJ: You want a leek instead of a cucumber?

XD

They’re just ridiculously adorable together and he tells her not to wear a short skirt when their dinner guests show up, but when it’s just him it’s fine. And they spend a lot of time joking and giggling at each other while waving giant cooking knives around. ♥

For a brief, delirious moment there I kind of wanted them to get married for real and have lots of ridiculous, inhumanly beautiful babies. Except the thought of the two of them in charge of children is completely terrifying. XD

Soon afterward, as KHJ is being adorably, hilariously defeated by a giant radish he’s trying to chop in half before their guests arrive...

HB: I’m supposed to change the moment they get here, right?
KHJ: Yeah. The minute the doorbell rings. *pounds futilely at knife*
HB: Don’t you think it’s okay, since they’re family? I don’t think it’ll matter...
KHJ: *still pounding away at the radish, and finally making some progress* You don’t think it’ll matter? Okay, when they get here, I’ll just wear my boxers!

Well that answers that question. XD

...she re-emerges wearing what I’m pretty sure are his pants. XD

And then half of SS501 shows up and they’re super cute with HB, hi-fiving all over the place. Just wait until the other guests show up...

ep. 33: HB and KHJ are cute when they compete against each other, but seeing them allied and cooperating and giggling and poking at each other with their forks while they egg their juniors on--is KIND OF TERRIFYING. XD

Other highlights of cute include the time KHJ is HB’s manager for a day and takes care of her pet dog while she does a performance for the military. They argue adorably about what she should wear onstage.

I totally cried when they broke up, as WGM couples inevitably do. Because it's, you know, a VARIETY SHOW. ON TV. They re-created their honeymoon, only less awkward, and rode horses, and climbed a mountain to say their farewells. And they were supposed to go back down separately, but they totally stalled and sat there eating together and doing all the talky stuff couples do when they break up on WGM.

The lesson is, I guess, that even in a VARIETY SHOW OF HILARITY Korea will rip out your heart and shred it into tiny pieces and then stomp on them.

But photogenically.

Seriously, why do they have to make you cry, I actually saved up the last episodes of three of the recent couples and did a stint of watching one every couple of days with the knowledge my heart was to be torn for my chest even though they are so clearly only dating every month or so

D'ARGH MOOD MUSIC.

Anyway. Sorry about that. :p
I'm now on bandwidth rations and therefore saving up points for Lie to Me and the show with Go Hye-Jin that's supposed to be about a reality show relationship, but I'm about to watch the manager episode of the JoongBo couple, when I decide to. I binge so bad on this stuff, I know I'll probably be watching through the ending when I do open it up again.

There's some point where Hwang Bo realizes things are better when she lets herself be immature around him, and there's no need to be the "adult" (everyone knows HE'S the strait-laced cautious one, age notwithstanding). The SPORTS COMPETITION DAY. OMG, he's so SERIOUSSSS just like a little Baek Eun Jo, not able to keep his glee at winning tamped down by his commitment to a suave image.

I always love the wedding photoshoot episodes, because you see the stars really at work, despite their awkwardness with each other--but what was hilarious is that with these two, they totally looked like they were still goofing off as usual, and I totally didn't see the shots they got when it was actually rolling.

[Aside with lures in it Have you seen the Adam couple? With Jo Kwon and Ga In. They were pretty awesome to watch, and their wedding shoot was awesome in a similar way. Though they really seemed different when they were being professional, Jo Kwon particularly. They had a REALLY fun interplay in their relationship.]

AAAAND basically my response to this whole post is i no rite? but going item by item would end up being a novella and we don't want that, not in your comments. So.

EEEEEEE, how cute is little srius Hyun Joong? The real one?

Having watched WGM, I am tempted by the Go Hye-Jin show. (Uh, also, written by the Hong Sisters. Even when they're terrible *cough*YAB*cough*, they're brilliant *cough*alsoYAB*cough*.)

Yeah, I remember the interview segment where she says that. So cute!

SPORTS COMPETITION DAY! It was like an episode of Hana Kimi. Especially with all the high jumping. XD

The wedding photoshoots are really interesting, because they have this interplay of "you're supposed to be genuine" with "this is obviously not genuine, it is a VARIETY SHOW and three months ago we didn't know each other" mixed with "we are professional pretty people, THIS IS WHAT WE DO."

[I confess I stopped watching after JoongBo broke up, partly because of my broken heart and partly because, well, there's just too much! Alex and Shin Ae were gone by then (they were my other favorite couple), and I was having a hard time finding episodes that worked.]

SUPERCUTE. I was oddly fascinated at how sometimes in the interview segments KHJ looked really bug-eyed, but never during the actual filming, no matter how obviously exhausted he was. Also oddly fascinating: watching him apparently not cut his hair for the entire duration. And watching HB go from being The Older Woman to her fun-loving self was so refreshing. Oh, my ridiculous, lovable lettuce darlings. ♥
