and with his right hand, shining he took out and as far as the hilt in his side buried the sword (this is not strictly accurate, because “shining” is an adjective not a participle, but I think it sounds better this way).

I almost have an apartment! In Westwood! It does not suck! To be sure, it is overpriced, but not as badly as it could be. The whole city sucks less than I have been led to believe. In fact, I could get to like it, or at least Westwood Village. Also, UCLA had some pretty buildings. Wish I knew which ones I’ll be in. And I practically have an apartment, which is great because I’d hate to think of the commuting time if I were camped out on Severance Green.

Lost all hearing in my left ear via excruciating pain some miles above LAX. Have mostly regained said hearing, but was most disconcerted for quite some time. Spent most of the day apartment-shopping and walking around in sweltering heat with Super-Mom. I always thought that LA had dry heat? Apparently not. Jasmine-cherry tea with crushed ice unbelievably good.

Went for dinner to Italian place with music that was probably a very famous ballet or something, and sounded pleasantly like a cross between the Harry Potter and Addams Family themes. That is, before it switched to some appallingly soppy oldies track, and then it was just appallingly soppy. Food was tasty, though. [livejournal.com profile] edajaram, their baseline martini was called “Han Solo”, and everything else was “Han with cranberry,” and so forth. Any ideas what I should do for my birthday? ;) They also had green apple martinis. Walked back to hotel, possibly bad idea considering a) we’d been walking all day in sweltering heat, b) it was over a mile, and c) it was still sweltering. Best shower EVAR.

Attempted to do monster Latin homework. Do not understand impersonal constructions very well, but happily translated Aeneid 2.550-58 (death of Priam, very nasty, don’t let it happen to you, especially if you know some guy calling himself “Neoptolemus”. See subject line of this post). Am pleased to note that Mandelbaum translation is fairly literal, at least in the parts that we’ve translated in class. My love of epic almost rivals my love for my electric toothbrush.

Off to the Getty tomorrow! SHOW ME THE SHINIES!

V. depressed. J and A’s employment “has been terminated”, as K put it, as of last Friday, and while T is nice, he has no idea how to teach grammar. I yearn for A’s charts and explanations, and for J’s gestures and weird definitions and overall general cute awkwardness. I can hear that voice every time I conjugate anything in the future or imperfect, and my flinty twisted evil little heart makes a little “Awww” sound. Woe and sadness. Now there is really no occasion for awkwardness every time we get gems of Plautus amounting to “All women love you because you are so handsome”. Now I (and the entire female population, plus C) have no-one to secretly ogle during the long dreary mornings. Now we are all desolate.

I just deliberately made that a tricolon. *facepalm*

Worse, my printer refuses to work. As there are several dozen review sheets helpfully having been sent by K, this is a problem. I am extremely displeased.

Also, I have gained what feels (and probably looks) like twenty pounds.

On plus side (maybe), have agreed to attend “convivium togarum” Friday night. As I will probably be the only person sober enough to remember any of it, were it not for the case that K writes “quod in convivio togarum fit, in convivio togarum manet”, you could probably expect a detailed and amusing account. Quae cum ita sint, I’ll supply what vague juicy tidbits of a not-too-incriminating nature there may be.

Off to make last batch of flash cards. How I hate them. Eheu, me miseram!
