Poor Ax had some kind of breakdown on Tuesday night, just as I was in the middle of taking a second stab at my translation project. Luckily I’d just sent the first pass to M., so all I had to do was run around in a panic for about ten minutes and then settle down with a notebook, then get up ungodly early and run around campus looking for a computer I could actually type on (as opposed to just search the Internet, which is all the library computers do). I got the thing in on time – and when I say “on time”, I mean AT 12 noon. It probably sucks, and I find that I care deeply that it probably sucks. But there’s nothing to be done about it now. I found some Apple repair people in Brentwood. The guy who eventually managed to resuscitate poor Ax was kind of an ass, but he didn’t charge me so I think I’ll forgive him. Between you and me, I don’t think he had any clue what he was doing. But whatever it was, it seems to have worked, and everything seems to be present and correct.

Met up with Sondy, who was her usual awesome self. I wish her all the best in her decision-making.

Ye Olde Movie Reviewe: “Stage Beauty” Her accent was good, but sounded funny coming out of her mouth. Couldn’t take my eyes off Billy Crudup. Fascinating. Saw bits of this at the end of term at St Andrews, and have ever since been curious about the rest of it. Can see why Ellen Kushner wrote that she wanted him to play Richard in a theoretical dramatization/movie. Since I’d seen glimpses of this movie from St Andrews and only after having read E.K.'s journal did I read Swordspoint, he has always been St Vier to me. I can see why. He had such a beautiful physicality, a grace composed entirely of muscle and sinew.

Am slowly watching the Stardust trailer. I have to say... it looks good. Really good. Kind of awesome, really. Even the Choir of Dramatic Chanting sucked less than those sorts of things tend to. I mean, normally I really hate them. But here it actually kind of works. Because the choir bits start at an appropriate point, before the acceleration really gets going. Or maybe because it’s less choppy than usual. Anyway. I cannot wait for this movie. Although *sigh* apparently nobody thinks it worthwhile to pronounce “TristRan”. Oh well. Tristan is a nice name. It bodes.

Have been having horrible dreams. Not exactly violent, just gory. And anatomically informed, thanks to BISC 216 last year. When I said that I missed bio? Dogfish shark liver was not exactly what I had in mind.

Finally got ahold of The Fall of the Kings. I couldn’t quite grasp it, I’m sorry to say. Maybe I read The Mists of Avalon a few times too many at the young and impressionable age of 13, but if I ever see the words “Grove”, “deer”, and “king” together in the same sentence, I’m going to throw up. Also there was too much sex. And I couldn’t bring myself to care what happened to Theron, not like I do about Alec and Richard and Katherine.

Funny about all these books about magic (or not about magic) in universities. You know how the students are always spontaneously having delightful academic debates with each other? I don’t think I ever had an academic debate outside of a classroom, and few enough inside the classroom (last week’s “Pastoral poetry, bah!” episode doesn’t count).
