Dithered about all morning and finally decided to go to Venice. I couldn’t find the canals or any of the stuff in my CityGuide, but this has long since ceased to surprise me. I walked along the ocean blvd thing, which was just like Telegraph Ave on a Sunday, except five times as long and by the beach. Bought two pairs of cheap flip-flops, because you can never have too many pairs of flip-flops. At least, not if you live in LA. And then I decided to walk back to the mall in Santa Monica, because I needed shirts, and it was... er, only a couple of miles, probably. Ah, beach. Oh, my feet.

Two Conversations, for your amusement (or possibly not).

Greek class, as everybody runs for the door:
PROFESSOR: So, next week we’ll do the good parts of Book 9, with the Cyclops.
ME: Finally, some stabnation!
EVERYBODY: ...stabnation? Is that, like...?
ME: You people are NO FUN AT ALL.

Latin class, as everybody runs for the door...
The Text...
ME: Can I talk to you about my paper topic?
PROFESSOR: Sure.
ME: Okay. So, I know I said he was boring...
PROFESSOR: Tibullus?
ME: Yes. But the part in 1.3 about the underworld is really cool, you know, where everybody gets tortured...
HALLWAY FULL OF PEOPLE: ...!
PROFESSOR: *doesn’t bat an eyelash* Yes, that part’s quite interesting.
ME: Excellent!
PROFESSOR: I look forward to reading it. *flees*

The Subtext...
ME: He must be getting used to me and my strange ways at last!
PROFESSOR: I may be getting used to her and her strange ways at last, but I sincerely hope not all Wellesley students are like this.
ME: See? You have something in common with your future colleagues already!

This predilection for gory poetry is starting to disturb me. Perhaps I need to re-think my self-image, again. On plus side, now that I know who he's making fun of, Ovid is positively delightful.

Ye Olde Movie Reviewes:

The 13th Warrior Um. This was fairly bad in terms of being COMPLETELY POINTLESS, but I did enjoy... well, mostly Antonio Banderas. And the crack about bringing a dog to war, because seriously, Arabian horses are tiny but awesome. Also, the Latin was mostly right, from what I could catch of it. This makes up for a lot.

Twelfth Night I don’t know why this freaked me out so much the first time I saw it. It is REALLY GOOD. Possibly I was confused because of all the juxtaposition and cutting back and forth and so on. But it worked really well.

Ye Olde TVye Series Reviewe: Mulberry. It is cute, but less than gripping. Geraldine McEwan is hilarious though.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, with writers commentary. I have learned that with these movies, I sort of have to say, “Okay, it’s a PIRATE movie. With ridiculous battle scenes. Get over it and enjoy it!” Which I did. Also, the commentary helps.

And then I went and saw At World’s End again, and then [livejournal.com profile] snowqueenofhoth saw it, and we flailed at each other about it on AIM this morning.

So afraid he'll be what they never were

Take a trip on a rocket ship, baby, where the sea is the sky
I know the guy who runs the place and he's out of sight
Flying Dutchman
Are you out there Flying Dutchman?
