There was sunset on the way home from Tesco this evening, and the subject line sprang into my head. Bonus points to anybody who knows what it's from. (ETA: [livejournal.com profile] kayselkiemoon, that means you!)

25 October 2004

Well, whaddayaknow. It just occurred to me that exchange students are not merely a creation of bad Harry Potter fanfics after all! *laughter*

31 October 2004
Monday: Brewing! Dude. If what certain people say about nutmeg is true, in theory I could make psychotropic gingerbread cookies. Excellent!

It seems I have a great and t00by love for Weird Al. Who knew?

Also, as regards writing literary analysis, it seems that I have the attention span of an abalone.

Friday: Feast! In which there is much mead, lovely bread, storytelling, singing – which I was tempted to supplement with a few verses of Sylvie – and pie. Lots of pie. I have no really appropriate attire, but I showed up in a skirt and cleavage – what more do they want? Sadly, I did not benefit from the cloven fruit, as I was sick and came as a leper. I even scribbled a little leper poem in honor of the occasion (which I illustrated as the night went on).

2 November 2004, Election Day: I wake to bright Eos and quote Homeric epithets in prayer as she rises rosy-fingered at the beginning of a long, long day.

14 November 2004
Monday: I like Glasgow Prestwick. Also helpful Glasgow train station people. Also Glasgow, for the 10 minutes I saw it. And the other 10 minutes I spent running around it after dark trying to find Queen Street Station on the way back (see Thursday).

Despite the best efforts of four- count ‘em, four- train schedules and Bus Eireann, I made it to [livejournal.com profile] edajaram’s flat before midnight. Go me! Er, and her, for meeting me at the under-construction bus station.

Tuesday: On which monumental day the Registrar’s office overcomes the University College Cork’s computer stupidity and becomes my new heroine. We must have a Registrar Appreciation day when we are all assembled again. Any excuse for a party, eh? ;) In all seriousness, though, I have a new respect and appreciation for the Registrar’s Office and all the wonderful people who make sure people like me can take the classes they desperately want to (biology ranting aside temporarily).

After registration [livejournal.com profile] edajaram and I locked ourselves in a very cool room with several harps, harpsichords, and fabulous views of the city, and made some approximation of music. The fiddle was intact, a nice contrast to the last time I took it on an airplane, so I was reasonably happy. I cannot vouch for the quality of the music on my part, however.

Blood Wine is yummy stuff. Especially when consumed at a table containing two very shiny pointy swords and various comic snippets (including one that shows an Elf-looking dude brandishing a dripping sword and captioned “with blood”).

Wednesday: Cathedral love, bookstore love, traditional music-store love, and brewery-smell non-love. And more bookstore love.

Thursday: See Monday in reverse, especially comments re: Glasgow.

Friday: Butler Aberdeen Adventure Weekend begins in Dundee with the RRS Discovery! Pretty, pretty boat! er, ship! It was re-done at some point, and I drooled all over the brass and beautifully varnished wood. Also cool video in the museum about Antarctica. Everybody else was bored, but I, biology geek and sucker for pretty images that I am, sat gaping for twenty minutes with my mouth open making silent “eep”ing noises. I wanna go to Antarctica!

Saturday: The ‘Adventure’ part of the weekend; enter Fiona the demon go-cart driver. Mwa-hahahaha! *makes “vroom!” noises* Also, I make a good – if slightly inept – archery Elf. But the go-carts were the best. Who knows, maybe bobsledding next! *sings Jamaican Bobsled chant*

Sunday: The bus ride back happens, punctuated by bus tour of Aberdeen and visit to Pictavia exhibit. I liked it, but then again I’m apparently the only American not taking a Scottish history class. Speaking of which… back to the presocratics. I think I’ll add Pythagoras to my paper, which is beginning to resemble an expensive Christmas goodie gift basket: full of nutcases, fluffy/crunchy/shiny filler material to pack all the stuff in, and now a fruitcake as the crowning touch.

I don't know where Tesco is and I don't know the song to those lyrics and I'm not certain I care about either. However, I too saw a beautiful sunset coming home from buying groceries (on foot through cambridge). I just stood there and stared for like ten minutes; so rare to notice anything like that in the city!

Aww, thanks. I'm glad you're amused. I hope your corner is cozy. And warm. And non-wind-chilled.

Glasow rocks! I love it to bits :). You should come visit sometime! And Prestwick's only 20min from my house - we fly from there sometimes in light aricraft. But it's a great wee airport - so not busy and really friendly passenger wise. Although did you know it has the highest freight turnover in Britain? It used to be the first stop off for refuelling of transatlantic flights and the American military still use it sometimes. It is also the only place Elvis ever set foot in Britain (because of one of the aforementioned transatlantic refuelling stops).

I say again - you must visit the beautiful Glasgow!

I definitely intend to go back some time, if I can - I have almost two weeks after term ends before I have to fly home, so I'll be travelling around. I'm thinking about bopping around Edinburgh (base camp, as my flight home's from there), Glasgow, the Border Abbies, anywhere else in Scotland, and maybe Glastonbury... oh, and I've never been to Wales either. Decisions, decisions!

This of course all sort of depends on whether my mom joins me. It'd be fun to travel together (for the first two days and then it'd be snipe, snipe, snipe), and not have all the responsibility of arranging stuff myself... but I actually like travelling solo. On the other hand, she's promised to leave room in her suitcase for some of my books, which would mean less shipping hassel for me... *sigh*

You must got up to Rannoch Moor and Glencoe on the road from Glasgow to Fort William, up the side of och Lomond (A82) - it's the most beautiful drive in the country!

i plead two things:

1. being behind on my reading list and only getting to this post this minute
2. and two, a cracked-pot memory. lots of cracks. i am certain i know where the line is from, but the memory-from-hell is not supplying me with the answer, at present. *sigh*

but yay for sunsets and scotland!

Perfectly valid excuses, O Kate. And I suspect you haven't read the book the line is from in quite a while anyway. Though you have read other works by the author, especially the new one last February.

If anybody actually cares what it's from, let me know. I'm just being evil.

Harpist in the Wind, Morgon to the High One right after he finds out... well, spoilery stuff. *grin* I cry every time I read that part. Oh how I love that book.
