she's got seagulls in her eyes
Nov. 27th, 2004 06:37 pmI, like so many other denizens of the FC iTunes conference, have discovered the joys of Great Big Sea. There are no words to describe my love.
Well, “great and t00by” might just about cover it.
Went to traditional Scots fiddle music concert of university student elite group today. Was much goodness, although no toe-tapping. How I wished for my fellow Fiddleheads! However, I was bad and snuck in my devilish little iPod-recorder-gadget. *smacks self* Bad, bad Fiona. Very bad.
I think my iTunes fiddle collection will forgive me.
21 November 2004
I’ve been reading up on the Hellenistic period for context, and there was a bit in this one book about Antigonus Monophthalmos and his son Demetrios. This is familiar territory; we read about their naval battles last semester. Unfortunately this book doesn’t relate the incident in which Demetrios is “ill” and daddy-dearest visits him – only to discover he’s not the only visitor, and makes affectionately snarky comments. Haha. I love those two. Probably the only father-son duo who weren’t trying to kill each other.
I need to find some Lionel Casson books. Just to reassure myself that classical history can be funny.

Well, here are two things I have a hard time believing exist, yet here they are in my book about Hellenistic Alexandria.
Ammonios, On the Fact that There Were Not More than Two Editions of Aristarchos’s Recension of the Iliad.
Aristophanes of Byzantion, On Words Suspected of Not Being Used by the Early Writers.
Good grief. Still looking for Casson though.
25 November 2004. Thanksgiving
My study abroad program hosted a Thanksgiving dinner at a fancy hotel in Edinburgh, which I attended after much agonizing over appropriate attire and much advice from Melanie. Brown cord skirts are truly wonderful things, as is 10-month-old hair gel. The bus ride home was enlivened by rather a lot of off-key caroling, and then some rather-more-on-key caroling when the off-key people lost interest and went to sleep. All in all a most satisfactory evening, especially as I remembered most of the verses to the Wassail Song (the one about ale).
Also, I have invented yet another proverb: No matter how many stars the restaurant has, a stale roll is still a stale roll.
27 November 2004
Warning: Classicist geek and nautical archaeology reference ahead. Again.
Lionel Casson is a god. I will make sacrifices to him, not because I want something, but because he is simply COOL and I wish to express my complete and utter adoration. How did I not know about these other books of his before?! Oh the joy!

wish i'd been there!
snuck in my devilish little iPod-recorder-gadget.
What is this?
and, you have an iPod? I'm fairly sure I'm getting one for christmas, although i'll be contributing. so now i need to know all about iPod accesories and foibles. I have iTunes on my computer. I want new headphones - does the iPod come with 'em, do you know? the pretty kind that stick in your ear and don't have a headband? I desire the iCar thingy but have a tape-converter that should do the trick... but a recorder gadget sounds quite desirable! *grins greedily*
meanwhile, glad your thanksgiving went well!

When I'm up I can't get down, get my feet back on the ground

They have a site: www.greatbigsea.com.

Date: 2004-11-30 12:35 pm (UTC)The Ancient Mariners (huzzah!)
Libraries in the Ancient World (VERY relevant to my essay)
Ships and Seamanship in the Ancient World (totally irrelevant, but cool anyway)
Sadly, I couldn't find Travel in the Ancient World, which is also all kinds of fun. But I figured those three were a good start.
