The NY Times, in an article about Babylon, called Herodotus an ancient Greek "scholar". *snicker* That's one word for him, I guess. I could think of others, all of them more exciting.

Also, the act of poetry/storytelling = regurgitating/spitting-out/apoptuein. You heard it here first.

Herodotus, in my opinion, is like the neighbor or friend who takes a trip someplace exotic, and then, upon return, makes you sit through six rolls of slides or photos while blabbering on all about the places they've been, misinterpretations of culture and spurious history included.

apoptuein. That's good. My favorite random word found in LSJ is geloƓmilia, fellowship in laughing.
