timerippleI’m here! I’m actually at UC Berkeley! I live in a building with the same name as a late great Scottish fiddler and have a double to myself, and although we have to carry keys around constantly because everything is locked, even the bathrooms, it is rather nice. The dorm complex is next to a First Church of Jesus Christ, Scientist and a Vedanta Center, and there is jasmine everywhere. Campus is beautiful. Sort of like Wellesley, but with more and bigger buildings and hills and trees. (Oh dear. Spelling and Grammar doesn’t like that at all.) And the library! There are rumored to be multitudes of bookstores, and while I haven’t found them yet they are all on one of my five maps from the nice people at check-in. My bum hurts from too much walking around then sitting all day.
The food is as close to excellent as dorm food can reasonably be permitted to get.
Res staff is currently having an intra-complex luau downstairs. Probably nobody will notice if I take the opportunity to plunk out a bit on the fiddle.
I’ve survived two days of Latin and don’t look to be perishing any time in the next few weeks at least. The main grad student instructor looks rather like Qui-Gon Jinn might have, if he had had short red hair and decided to teach Latin rather than the ways of the Force. One of the other grad student instructors went to Wellesley and did the UCLA Post-bacc, same as me (as it currently seems), so it was nice to talk to her during a break. My fellow-escapees-from-mental-hospitals-for-those-crazy-enough-to-want-to-take-ancient-languages-and-deemed-therefore-dangerous-to-society... er, students, seem all right. “All right” as in “a mixed bunch, some of whom seem interesting and most of whom appear to be nice”. No sign of Our Fearless Leader of the Bacchantes, but who knows.
I cannot say, “Woe is me, I am wretched” or “Goat, be sacrificed!” but I can say Staphyla simia est, which means “Staphyla is a monkey”. I guess it’s a start.
