Why is it ALWAYS the printer? *bangs head on makeshift desk* Went to the Getty yesterday after failing spectacularly to get a library card. The person I was supposed to see for my nice, annual, full-benefits card was out to lunch, and the person I got instead tried to charge me $20 for a card that would expire in December. How stupid do I look? I went to the public library and got out fodder for Ye Olde Movie Reviewe.

Ye Olde Movie Reviewe: “A Room With A View”. It was entertaining, but kind of pointless. Why is George socially unacceptable, aside from being totally out to lunch? Why is Lucy so determined to delude herself? Who is this guy Cecil anyway? Perhaps I should read the book. I did love Judi Dench’s novelist character and Maggie Smith’s chaperone and their gossiping, and Freddy with his terminally untidy hair. I think I have a weakness for Victorian dress – the women’s clothes are so pretty and flowy, and the men look nice as well. I love everybody’s hats. HATS!

The Getty was lovely. I re-visited the Italian painting room. I’m particularly fond of Dossi’s “Saint George” and his neighbor, Titian’s “Alfonso d’Avalos, Marquis of Vasto, in Armor with a Page”. When I first saw it on my last visit, I had to read the placard before I even realized there was a page, being too busy staring at the Marquis himself.

There was also a lovely exhibit on illuminated manuscripts, which I hadn’t seen last time, and which made me miss you all terribly. I especially liked one called “Two Fishermen and Sea Beast”, in which two fishermen had mistaken a giant sea beast for an island, set up camp, and started cooking dinner. The sea beast, inevitably, started to dive, and you could see the men and their stuff slipping. One guy was very obviously saying heatedly to the other: “This is all your fault!” *grin* Apparently Thursday afternoons are the time to go, because there were very few people there and no lines at all. Score! Getting there was more interesting than strictly necessary, and went something like this:

Me: Can you tell me which stop is near the Getty?
Bus Driver: The Getty stop IS the Getty.
Me: Oh. Good.
Bus Driver: A better question would be, Can you tell me when we get there?
Me: Okay then.
Bus Driver: Do you want me to tell you when we get there, or when we get there?
Me: Shut up and drive the bus, plzkthx.

Ye Olde Movie Reviewe: “Time Bandits”. Think Bill and Ted meet Legend of Zelda and join Gulliver’s Travels, with midgets.

Ye Olde Movie Reviewe: “Bram Stoker’s Dracula”. Finally, something for which I’ve actually read the book (as of yesterday)! Well, all I can say is, if Mina’s engaged to Keanu “I Can’t Do An English Accent” Reeves, who can blame her for falling in love with a vampire? Even if Dracula does wear blue sunglasses.

Ye Olde Movie Reviewe: “Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights”. Yes, I’ve read the book. Movie: surprisingly, astoundingly good. I have always had very little sympathy for Cathy and Heathcliff, but Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes are SO. FREAKING. GOOD. Especially him.

I am strongly reminded of why, exactly, I refused for a long time to take a beginning modern language class: textbook exercises and scenarios notoriously infantile, class discussion insipid. Nevertheless, have gotten through first day without making complete fool of self or causing bodily harm to air-headed classmates. Am not sure which is the greater accomplishment. Thank you, Mummy and Daddy, for paying for private liberal arts college. Just think – I too could have been a self-absorbed Valley Girl who insists on proclaiming loudly and angrily, while the professor is talking, “I like f****ing need this f***ing class! This is like my last f****ing quarter, and this is like the only f****ing like upper division class I haven’t like taken! F****ing sh*t!” three or four times.

Okay, so I’m still self-absorbed.

Oh. Forgot to post this before because we were busy, but.

Melanie and I are highly amused. *g* Especially by the bus thing. Oh. And valley girls. Valley girls are always amusing.

what is your current email address???!

I must admit to great curiosity, as I still don't know what it is your doing these days, only that it takes place in LA. and what language are you taking?

I love the film Possession, but MacGyver makes me twitchy. maybe it's just because I've seen a bit of Stargate due to my brother liking it, and looking at Richard Dean Anderson in Stargate and then looking at him in MacGyver makes me wince. ^_^ I don't think I was over the moon about the Binoche/Fiennes Wuthering Heights, but I also a. didn't love any of the versions I've seen and b. don't really cotton on the book. although it's been years and years since I've read it, so *shrug* maybe another chance is in order.

I miss you! while I have no email or mailing address, I do have your cell nomber I believe. a call is definately in order. ^_^

hehheheheh. Actually even the cell phone number is probably out of date. I'll send you an email with Pertinent Stuff. Whee!

I'm currently taking German, Latin, and Greek.
