I think I may have passed Greek, which would be nice. Spent the afternoon in Santa Monica. Must have stood on the pier for a good half an hour staring out over the fishing rods and past the buoys. It was mostly grey and cloudy, except for a patch due west where the sun was over the water. It was beautiful.

Some Guy: Excuse me. Does you watch also say it’s ten till four?
Me: *checks watch* Yes.
Some Guy: Thanks. Are you from Europe?
Me: ... No.

From which I think I have to conclude that it’s not the hat, it’s the coat. I thought it was the hat, when that guy in the taqueria at MIT asked if I was French, but I was wearing the coat that day too. (Remember? It was when we went to see Star Wars: The Musical, which is much funnier in hindsight now that I’ve seen Into the Woods.)

Ye Olde Movie Reviewe: “Spaceballs”. You know, this movie really should not be this funny. BUT IT IS.

Ye Olde Movie Reviewe: “Romeo + Juliet”. I liked it better this time around – oh, Emo Boy!Romeo. Clearly the Shakes production last spring helped me appreciate this play a lot more than I used to. I still dislike it because pretty much everybody annoys me, but I have some degree of sympathy now. However, three words, and then goodnight indeed: LEO’S HAIR. GOD, LEO’S HAIR. (That’s only three. Shut up.) He has perfect hair, in the sense that it’s perfectly windswept and untidy and falls artlessly over one eye just so and the highlights look really good in front of Dramatic Sun Lighting, and GUH. “Learn, guys,” as Crowley says.

I really need Google Movie Themes (like Google Scholar, etc., but for movie themes, obviously). I keep hearing phrases that I KNOW I’ve heard somewhere, but can’t remember exactly where.

Ye Newe Movie Reviewe: “The Fountain”. It was... weird. But kind of satisfying, in a really cool but unsubtle way. I walked out the theatre door and turned west and there was the sun just starting to set and it was deeply fulfilling and gold-colored.

That, and I’d just eaten two scoops of Sticky Toffee Pudding ice cream. I kid you not. (The real thing is better. But it was still tasty. Also, I hadn’t had any ice cream since September. And I’d finished my Latin final in, like, 45 minutes.)

Ye Newe Movie Reviewe: “Casino Royale”. I tried to stay awake, and I managed it. Barely. I may have dozed off during the MILD SPOILER airport scene. And then it just wouldn’t end! I was bored before they even got to the casino. (Sorry, [livejournal.com profile] cadragongirl. The Bond movies just don’t do it for me.) Admittedly there were some funny moments. But you know it’s a danger sign when the gadgets are the best part of a film. Any film. Especially one in which they do not appear.

You know there’s a downside to having an elementary knowledge of Latin? Misuse of the language in fic titles, spells, etc. really annoys me now. Incorrect cases, nonsensical word order, vocabulary misuse, first person PIA when clearly an imperative was in order... gyah!

Things I am going to do the minute I get back to LA (in probable order of importance):
1. Clean my face with my five-step facial cleanser kit. Use all five steps. There is a reason I hate air travel, and it’s not the parody of national security that's going around yelling at people and not providing free quart-sized plastic bags.

Actually I can’t think of anything else at the moment. I have spent almost my entire vacation with the most shocking cold, and will be very glad when it’s over. Both the vacation and the cold. I thought I’d take advantage of the lack of downstairs neighbors to get in some practice, but to tell the truth I haven’t had the heart. I miss you all terribly. “Home” is undergoing revision, in that I now divide my time between LA and my parents’ new house. “Home” is really a U-shaped brick building in which I can no longer live. Exile is, for me, something of a delayed reaction. I still find it hard to believe that Into the Woods was a year ago, and that I’m not getting on a plane to Boston tomorrow to hang out with my best friends, fiddle, eat ramen and make cows.

Well, one of four’s not bad. I leave it to you to divine which one I’ll be doing. Hint: it’s not the cows.

Well, I’ve remembered what 2) was going to be: Find the Eyebrow Tweezers. But apparently the situation wasn’t as dire as I thought.

Ye Olde Movie Reviewe: “Proof”. What can I say? I *heart* geeks. Especially ones who are good at all that math stuff I happen to be terrible at. And are tall, dark, and in really geeky bands.

Ye Newe Movie Reviewe: “Pan’s Labyrinth”. OMG so gross. And so good. And weird. And gross. And good. It’s the kind of movie [livejournal.com profile] edajaram and I would have dragged Siena to, and she would have ended up liking it more than either of us. Okay, we probably wouldn’t have had to drag her. I really loved how all the little sounds of movement - giant insect segments clicking, leather boots creaking – were mirrored in the speech. Spanish is such a cool language, with all sorts of poky corner bits and clicks and unexpected softnesses.

And now I am signing off, for there is makeshift dinner to prepare, and stuff from the library to watch. I have Monty Python and the Holy Grail, An Ideal Husband, and the first disc of Cowboy Bebop. Some days I really love LA. And I think it might rain.

yay! a Fiona post!

um, you didn't like Casino Royale?? hrm.
but I'm glad to hear you liked The Fountain and Proof. I've been wanting to see those.
and yay An Ideal Husband! *heart* have you seen Cowboy Bebop before? I adore that series. why did it have to end??? why? why?! ^_^

reading about peirs and the sea makes me homesick (cape). I think I'm gonna go out a few weekends from now. walking on the beach in January at the Cape is great fun. each month is different.
in terms of home, munger and wellesley is still imprinted as home #3 for me. it's weird to know that I only know 4 people who're still undergrads.

Yay! A Kate comment!

I can't seem to really like any of the Bond films, even the ones with Sean Connery, and it's not even on principle. I just sort of doze off while waiting for something to happen. I admit I did enjoy the first chase scene in Casino Royale - the bad guy running was so graceful, it was beautiful to watch. Then they fought, and it got boring. *shrug*

I hadn't seen Cowboy Bebop, except for this one episode in which [livejournal.com profile] edajaram tried to explain Ed to me, and he hasn't shown up yet. (I think it was Ed, anyway.) But it is much fun so far (5 episodes).

*grin* with almost all of the Bond films, my attention starts to wander after a while. part of it is plot tediousness, and part of it is how the various actors play the character of James Bond. which is why I adored Casino Royale so much, because Daniel Craig's Bond was very different. you can fit it into the Bond-verse by the fact that Casino Royale is JB's first story, before he starts killing so many people and sleeping with so many women. the fact that in CR his heart was involved (and hurt) could explain why (in JB-verse) he later grows callous towards women and it's like, another caper another sex-interest. (calling them love-interests is not accurate *snort*).
if I lost you while discoursing on Bond, my apologies. *grin* not counting Casino Royale, my favorite JB is Sean Connery. then Pierce Brosnan I guess. Roger Moore is way to smarmy-not-hot. I don't think the other actors really inhabited the character enough to be JB. ah heck, I should be blabbering to Melanie about this, not you. ^_^

yay Ed!! golly I want to rewatch those.

Yeah, I did all the rationalization and speculation at the time and still didn't enjoy it. *shrug* But I did enjoy Cowboy Bebop. No Ed yet though.

Which is weird, because I think the only time I've seen Cowboy Bebop was to watch part of a movie in art club senior year of high school...

And Savage Garden, YAY! :D

I hate Spaceballs. Just so you know. Although I think maybe you knew that already.

I never saw R&J, but I WANT TO. And yeah, the Shakes show did wonders for my outlook on the show. Muuuuch more appreciation now. Meredith (and everyone) did such a kick-ass job.

Misuse of the language in fic titles, spells, etc. really annoys me now.
Please tell me the "spells" part wasn't a reference to HP. Because otherwise, I will be forced to have my mother dig out my Witching Hour notes and mail them to me, just so I can type up the "Use of Latin in HP" lecture for you. According to the Latin scholar lady, JK is a creative genius and doesn't misuse Latin, but instead plays with the language. Which is cool. Kind of like what we do when we butcher English rightkthnx. ;)

“Home” is really a U-shaped brick building in which I can no longer live.
Argh, don't say things like this. I'm not homesick and I don't WANT TO BE. :( Way to be depressing.

tall, dark, and in really geeky bands
Sounds good to me. ;)

“Pan’s Labyrinth”
Huh. I suppose I might try to download it, if I get around to it. :)

And dude. YOU FINALLY UPDATED. DO IT MORE.
AND YOU'RE NEVER ON AIM. D:

All of it was in reference to (mostly bad, but quite a lot of good) fics whose authors don't know Latin or anybody who does. JKR also uses Greek, or at least Latin words that are clearly derived from Greek. But she uses mostly verbs that actually make sense for effecting changes or transformations, whereas a lot of people keep trying to use words like "go" or "be", which is really annoying. /Latintalk

Pan's Labyrinth - if you do, apply ffwd freely.

I am on AIM when I'm online. This does not usually happen when you are. Except right now, apparently.
