Ye Olde Movie Reviewe: “Into the Woods”. The Broadway production. It was very good. Excellent. Ours was better, of course.
Ye Olde Movie Reviewe: “The Dark Crystal”. ...Okay, so now I’ve seen it.
I am (gradually) reading Adrienne Mayor’s book on paleontology in Classical times. It is... not exactly life-changing? Because I already know I’m interested in these very things. But this is the first time I’ve seen somebody in Classics doing something with them, and furthermore saying that people in humanities and science should pay attention to a time when their disciplines weren’t separate, and for God’s sake not to sneer at each other.
Crap. Does this mean I have to get into Princeton?
Speaking of Princeton, Ye Olde Movie Reviewe: "A Cinderella Story". Okay, so I'm kind of a sucker for high-school movies, probably because it's such a horrible time, and teenagers have this incredibly emo capacity for intense emotions, and they feel things so strongly, and DUDE! the whole world is out there before them if they can just get at it. And they want to, so badly, with everything that's in them.
Or at least, I did.

Been, you know, busy. Aristophanes is kicking my ass, but in a good way. Apuleius? Well, from reading him in translation you’d never know he’s actually quite boring. At least in the prologue. His sentence structure is pretty straightforward; he just uses an unnecessary number of words, ALL of which I have to look up. And it takes forever with no amusing payoff. Probably just about any other part of the Metamorphoses would be more interesting – half the translators leave the prologue out. It’s winter quarter, for God’s sake. Couldn’t we do Cupid & Psyche or something, you know, interesting? And seasonal?
Have watched first four episodes of “DN Angel” (zomg I JUST got that. *smacks self over the head*). It’s too well-thought-out and consistent plotwise to be cracktastic, but it is kind of slashtastic, which is the next best thing. Also, pretty. And the dubbing’s really good – they pronounce Daisuke “DAIS-ke” like in Japanese and the voice-types sound like they would in Japanese, i.e. eccentric grandfather, bossy but loving mother, 14-year-old boy, a frillion shojos, etc.
ETA: Or it WOULD be slashtastic, if one of the characters didn’t keep randomly disappearing!
That evening...
Finished Aristophanes early, so more time for me. I can either read more Apuleius or watch more DN Angel. Hmmm. The as-yet-unnammed gabby Lucius, or Daisuke and Dark? Guess who wins...
Have also now read Terry Pratchett's Pyramids. Loved it. Assassins, plus warped ancient Egypt, Greece, and Troy. I particularly like the incident in which Teppic meets Xeno in the middle of his tortoise experiment (yep, still on a pre-Socratic kick). The funniest line, however, has got to be "And that's Antiphon, the greatest writer of comic plays in the world" (p. 224). Possibly this is only funny if you've actually read Antiphon. If you haven't, I refer you to my entry on October 25, 2005.

Ye Olde Movie Reviewe: “Willow”. I must be on a George Lucas kick. This movie is even better than I remember it being, possibly because I can actually hear the Brownies this time. Also, Val Kilmer was pretty hot twenty years ago, in an unwashed-brawn-but-few-brains-warrior kind of way. And the climactic fight scene? Is two old ladies whaling on each other. Siriusly.
Also got nostalgic and watched ROTS and ROTJ (hence the "George Lucas kick"). I finally got why, from a certain point of view, it was absolutely necessary to put Hayden Christiensen in the end of ROTJ. Aren’t you proud of me, Rachel? (Of course then I had to go and have a philosophical debate with myself, which kind of ruined the epiphany. Typical.)

I hear that there’s going to be a “Romeo and Juliet Ball” in the Library Rotunda for Valentine’s Day. This is sweet, but somehow I don’t think it bodes well for any couples that show up.
Of course I have not cancelled my Netflix subscription now that it is no longer free because, hello, unlimited supply of anime.

my brother was more into the tv-candy than I was; each morning before school he'd be glued to the television. my favorite shows from grade school were 3-2-1-Contact!, Square One, Avonlea... I never really got into 'prime time television' until I went to college; in highschool it was Mystery!, Masterpiece Theatre, and mysteries shown on other channels (Poirot, Marple, Rumpole...).
have you seen/heard any Eddie Izzard? I adore the icon I'm using, but no doubt it's funnier in context. :D

I got the 3-2-1-Contact! magazine for a while. I think I liked it mostly for the time-machine comic, because we didn't even have a computer at the time, and the rest of it made no sense. Actually I have no idea why my parents even subscribed. Perhaps they liked the time-machine comic too.
