Finished Emma Bull's War for the Oaks, which was pretty damn good once I got into it (ditto LMB's A Civil Campaign). Although I’m not sure how much of a surprise it was supposed to be that Hedge and various other characters were what they were. But Tithe makes a LOT more sense now. Ditched six-hour film class today in favor of finishing Miles, Mystery & Mayhem. I am such a bio geek. Who knew I actually liked non-parody science fiction? Admittedly the parts I like best are the sf-of-manners, but whatever.

I have also begun writing Wilde Birds, which is rapidly turning into Two Men on a Quest (To Say Nothing of the Hoopoe) and features over-worked valets, a butler, lots of luggage, Tennyson galore, and the Cloudcuckooland Society. I need Victorian swear words, lots of them.

Ye Olde Miniseries Reviewe: Robin Hood. Our hero is kind of cheeky and annoying, but he wears a freaking medieval hoodie, which is kind of awesome. Now we know the real reason he went on Crusade: to search the Near East for remnants of Eternally Confused Boy Alexander the Great’s wardrobe patterns. Marion is actually a normal-sized person, and cool without being badass. Guy of Gisbourne is very obviously modeled on a Sean Bean character, probably Sharpe. Will Scarlet is cute. Alan-a-Dale looks kind of like an escapee from Shakespeare in Love, which is not actually a terrible thing. The Sheriff is cooler than the hero. Sometimes the "modern sensibility" dialog is painful, and sometimes it really works. For example:
Marion: He just has to get his kleos glory, doesn’t he.
Much: Nah, I think he just wants to be loved.

I do not make this stuff up.

Ye Olde Movie Reviewes:
Casablanca. I swear, this movie gets better every time I watch it.
The Best Years of Our Lives. Huh. Really well done, lots of irony in the imagery, just not the most interesting thing ever. Although plenty entertaining, at times...
Peggy: Yes, I am in love with him! *demeanor of noble womanly suffering*
Peggy’s Mother: And now you’ve met his wife.
Peggy: *sniffle* Yes.
Peggy’s Mother: Have you decided what you’re going to do about your being in love with him?
Peggy (bravely): Yes!
Everybody: Aww, she’s going to suffer in demure silence and be all noble, and stuff.
Peggy: ...I’m going to break up this marriage!
Everybody: This is... not what we were expecting.
Gun Crazy. Zzzzzzzzz.
Sunset Boulevard. Creepy as all hell, and magnificent. And seeing as I don’t tango, I totally would have kept the hardwood floor. *sigh* Rich people never appreciate their hardwood floors.

Finished Samurai Champloo. Oh Jin. Oh Mugen. Oh Jin. *cries*

Wellesley has been much on my mind of late. I bet that fragrant purple stuff in front of the science center is blooming about now.

Aww. You're listening to ME! :) Sweet.

And JIN. Yes, JIN.

Never mind that we're talking about different Jins for different reasons (I'm assuming that last bit).

Jinnnnn.

Shige still wins.

I... don't think I want to get into a discussion about reasons with YOU, thanks. ;) Because I know it will end with you flailing all over the place and me just trying to keep up with the links. *l*

Shige still wins

Well, of course.

Sunset Boulevard. Creepy as all hell, and magnificent.

It is awesome, isn't it? I've seen it twice, and if TCM shows it again when I'm paying attention to their schedule, I'll watch it again.

I totally would have kept the hardwood floor. *sigh* Rich people never appreciate their hardwood floors.

:) Funny how that was one of the creepiest scenes in the movie, because of the music and the big empty dance floor. A great big lavish party for the inmates :) Although, if I go to hell, that's what I want it to look like.
