I'm at the Sacramento airport, waiting for my rather late-running late-night flight to JFK and then back to Boston. Thank all the powers that be. It’s been rather a difficult week.

I love this airport SO MUCH, btw. The jetBlue terminal is less shiny and exciting than the main one, but it does have free wireless. For a while I was thinking about buying Twilight and reading it for the laughs, the crazy, the sparkle. But the bookstore only has Breaking Dawn, so I'll have to stick with LJ for now.

As I was saying, it’s been rather a difficult week. I spent a lot of time down at the fish pond with Dad as he worked on the dock. I stood in the water and ran away from the fish when they came too close. (ME: Do goldfish have teeth? DAD: Yes. Big teeth. *cackle* ME: AAAHHHH!!!! Killer goldfish! Wahhh!) Since he finished rebuilding the dock yesterday, I spent a lot of time sitting on it paddling my feet in the water and giggling whenever the fish came too close. We bought twelve new fish this week, and some of them even got names. It went something like this:

FISH STORE GUY: Here you go. I picked out ones with all different colors.
MOM (brightly): Thank you! What’s your name?
FISH STORE GUY: Johnny.
MOM (brightly): Thank you, Johnny! We’ll name one of them after you!
ME (sotto voce): Good thing I already named that big pushy one Jun-chan, then.

And so it came to pass that we have an entire pond of JE fish. Well, not an entire pond, because most of them are orange and look exactly alike and there's no point in naming them. But with the exception of Yuki, Ralph (the biggest one), Not-Ralph (the other biggest one), Speckly, and Johnny (exception negotiable), all the ones that have names are named after JE boys.

Yeah. When I wasn't feeling like that one scene in the Hitchhiker's Guide movie where they land on Vogsphere and keep getting whacked in the head by shovels if they get any ideas, I spent my vacation naming goldfish and cackling a lot.

Heheh. That happened because there are two big orange fish, about the same size, whose tails have white edges. Ralph has some white around the mouth as well, but unless you look closely, they're identical. Hence "Ralph" and "That-big-fish-that's-not-Ralph-but-looks-a-lot-like-him".

The other fish are named thusly:
Jun-chan (big and pushy, dark back and orange belly)
Ryo (little and pushy, speedy, lighter orange with thin black dorsal streak)
Chinen (the cutest one, tiny and orange with half a black dorsal streak)
Yuki (little and white)
Nika (dark with orange patches, extra swooshy)
Senga (orange with dark patches, almost as swooshy)

There are about fifteen assorted orange fish, and about four other dark fish of varying sizes that nobody can figure out how they got there. I have decided that they're pond mutants, goldfish affected by radioactive waterlilies. They are fast, sneaky and practically invisible, so I call them all Ninja-fish.

Oh! And Johnny, half orange and half white, and Massu, big, orange, white mouth, eats a lot. :)

so are they koi, or just your average goldfishies? one of my friends used to have a pond-full of about 12 or so butterfly koi, compliments of the previous owner, until herons and/or egrets came & made a meal out of all but two or three. one got away, but died of injuries. so sad. :(

Just your average two-for-a-dollar medium-sized goldfish. :) The ones that don't mysteriously die seem to like the pond a lot.
