Happy St Patrick’s Day! I approve of the holiday in principle and usually in practice (mostly because I like the music and look good in green). And I have to post about it, because I picked up this icon pretty much for the express purpose of using it today. So.

Saturday morning I took the bus to visit [livejournal.com profile] kayselkiemoon. Remarkably, nothing went wrong en route. This is a new experience. And behold, when I stepped off the bus there was a parade in honor of my arrival! Kate & Co. braved the St Patrick’s Day parade blockades in order to fetch me away to their book-and-dog haven. We had Thai food for lunch and then wandered around Whole Foods, getting free cake and gelato samples and saying things like “I fear the Earl Grey flavor was not a success” and “Oooh, peanut butter!”

In the evening, Kate and I took off in search of high adventure, captivating people, and transcendent music. Well, two out of three’s not bad, no? We sat in The Hungry Tiger delicately munching our cheese dinner and playing word games while a pseudo-Irish duo played and sang. Occasionally we would sip our ginger ales and nod sagely to one another, as Knowledgeable People do. We left a bit early and eluded the Helpful Neighborhood Layabout, who suggested that we might enjoy an evening stroll in the wilderness walk behind the baseball field. Riiiiiight.

Instead, we drove around looking for the library, and wound up crashing a dog-welcoming party at the home of a friend of Kate’s. There we found excellent people and an enormous, lovely black dog.

We arrived back in time to catch most of The Empire Strikes Back. Commentary was kept to a minimum, as Certain People had (gasp) never seen any of the Star Wars movies in full. I am confident that this deficiency has by now been remedied.

For perhaps the first time in all my visits to Chez Kate, I did not have the opportunity to lose spectacularly at cards. Perhaps another time.

Sunday morning started off in style with a mad rush to go see Watchmen. I’d read the first few pages of the graphic novel the night before, but had otherwise no real preparation. It was... well, I closed my eyes during a few parts. And some of the shots weren’t so much gory as unnecessary. (The very last shot of the bathroom sequence? Totally destroyed the understated menace of the scene. It makes me sad that some people think “visual subtlety” is an anathema.) I had a little trouble following some of the plot, though I caught on in time for the Rather Pointless Final Confrontation. But there were interesting moral and psychological issues, and those have stuck around in my brain for a few days. And the music was mostly excellent. So the movie gets points for those, I guess.

Home safely to the tune of green-clad mobs singing on the T. Now for the masses of reading, blech. But I’m really excited about my next publishing assignments. And I found discount peanut butter fudge at Shaw’s yesterday. So it’s not, you know, all bad.

There is no possible way a Star Wars week could not be awesome. :)

That Thai place was pretty darn yummy! I'll definitely remember it for Future Reference.
