Halloween and on my own, since [livejournal.com profile] cadragongirl is off having wild times in New Hampshire or somewhere equally exotic. It involves costume wings and sparkly blue antennae, that's all I know.

So far today I have:

- re-read the All Hallows Eve bits of The Perilous Gard. For Atmosphere!
- been to the library
- taken a detour because although it is ridiculously warm, the fallen leaves smell gorgeous
- taken a nap
- gotten the jump on my neighbors for Halloween noise by playing pensively upon my violin for half an hour
- bought a Japanese grammar book from the ‘40s. The introduction and notes on kana are kind of hilariously racist. “Reader, the reason nobody studies Japanese is because there are no good grammar books! Also, it is the world’s most difficult language! But we have invented Romanization and our book is awesome! Btw, starting in 1949 primary school children will be instructed only in romaji as an experiment to see if this pesky complicated writing system can be gotten rid of! But we’re a long ways yet from that goal, which will benefit the culture and greatly accelerate their national progress. Well, enjoy!” *facepalm* At least the kana charts are glorious and include separate charts for stroke order. Anyway it was only three bucks used and nobody's getting any royalties.

How I intend to spend the rest of the evening:

- tasty burrito dinner
- finish off the package of Reese’s peanut butter cups I bought en route to the library
- finish off the Ben & Jerry’s cheesecake brownie ice cream I bought yesterday
- I was going to sit around in my witch robe, which used to be a Sexy Witch Robe until I took a pair of scissors to it back in sophomore year so I could have better range of motion while duelling [livejournal.com profile] snowqueenofhoth as a Death Eater, which I must say turned out to be a great improvement. No, that’s a lie, I think it was two years later when we went to The Witching Hour that I cut it up, and I was a Hufflepuff then and got awarded points for my costume which helped us win the House Cup. Take that, suckers! Anyway, I’ve still got it around here somewhere. But it’s kinda warm in the apartment, so maybe I’ll skip that one.
- watch the final episode of the most boring drama about a teenaged vampire in love with his homeroom teacher I ever saw
- followed by some Buffy to cleanse the palate
- maybe read Coraline if I’m feeling studious

Ahhh. Good times.

I love October. I'll miss it. Fall always means new beginnings to me. Maybe because of the school year, maybe because it is quite literally my beginning. I’ve been lots of new places in the fall: Massachusetts, St Andrews, Los Angeles, Vancouver. I like the idea of beginnings in the dying of the year.

What are y'all doing to celebrate?

SQUEE I knew you had awesome taste ♥ I love this book so much, omg. I wrote not one but two papers on it last year and I still love it, so I guess that says how much.

I was browsing through the library children's section as usual the other day, and it was on the "Check these out or they get the axe!" shelf. (Which is sacrilege, but especially because it's a Newbery Honor book.) So I saved it, obviously, with much dismay and indignation.

I have this habit of gushing over books to random important people who then look amused and tell me they edited the book. That happened with Perilous Gard, and I swear my pupils went heart-shaped right then and there. XD
